3 Ways to Honor Older Americans Month

Each year since 1963, the President signs a proclamation regarding Older Americans Month in celebration of the achievements and contributions of the nation’s older persons.

As a society, we need to look at our older population and recognize the significant impact that they have made in our lives and history.

The 2019 theme, is “Connect, Create, Contribute.”

“Communities that encourage the contributions of older adults are stronger! By engaging and supporting all community members, we recognize that older adults play a key role in the vitality of our neighborhoods, networks, and lives.” (ACL.GOV)

  1. Connect- With family, friends, and support services. Big Dreams MN offers seniors that are currently living in their own homes an opportunity to connect with their loved ones and friends by having the ability to participate in day trips and adventures. Having these support services are really important to fight the loneliness and isolation that can occur as we age. And how fun to connect with the community by having fun adventures and seeing new places!?
  2. Create- Relationships. When we spend time with each other doing fun things, we learn about one another, and we start to create a bond of friendship and trust. Providing opportunities for our residents to have moments together not only creates positive relationships but also builds trust within their place of residence. We create community by bringing together engaging events that promote learning, healthy aging and life enrichment.
  3. Contribute- Volunteerism. This is a call to action for people to provide their talents and skills to older adults, and provide life giving moments that benefit others. We encourage our community to bring their talents (musician, creative, educator), interests or business to consider offering those skills and experiences to share with the seniors in their community. Activity Directors and Life Enrichment Directors need to be able to meet the needs of their residents and provide services that are engaging, new and bring the community together- they are looking for you! Share your talents here!
